Automation & Controls Technologist

 

About the job

As a member of our Manufacturing Engineering team, you will support fast, safe, and high quality manufacturing of TMI products. Support TMI’s move towards Industry 4.0 and advanced manufacturing. Support Operations by maintaining controls and troubleshooting current production equipment to reduce downtime. Work with Manufacturing Engineering on electrical component design for new projects.

Responsibilities Include

Maintenance and Troubleshooting

 
  • Perform electrical maintenance as required.
  • Ensure all diagnosis and troubleshooting are completed as required e.g., PLC/relay logic-based systems and HMI.
  • Ensure all product and quality issues related to automated equipment are investigated and solutions are identified

  • Act as a department resource for automation systems development and implementation
  • Ensure that all fixtures and workstations are designed to allow for the efficient and safe production of leading-edge medical devices.
  • Implement quality and efficiency improvements for existing manufacturing lines.
  • Participate in validation and verification activities for new and modified products and process.
  • Ensure all process documentation are prepared e.g., work instructions, standard operating procedures, process control techniques.
  • Create documentation of electrical drawings and design concepts.
  • Ensure that training programs are developed for assembly skills.
     
Project Management
 
  • Lead electrical design projects for manufacturing engineering e.g., line expansions and machine modifications.
  • Lead electrical utility projects for our facility and grounds maintenance.
     
health & Safety
 
  • Ensure compliance with relevant health and safety legislation, including the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, the Occupational Health and Safety Act, etc.
  • Ensure compliance with TMI’s health and safety policies, and procedures, e.g., neat and orderly work environment, wearing prescribed PPE
  • Establish programs to improve industrial health and safety and identify and correct safety hazards
  • Act using knowledge of the electrical safety code and its application in industrial wiring and power distribution.
     
Qualifications
 
  • Diploma or Degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering, or a related field of study
  • 5 years of experience in a high-volume manufacturing or industrial setting
  • Experience working in a regulated industry is an asset, e.g. pharmaceuticals or aerospace
  • Experience with Industrial Controls electronics and PLCs
  • Experienced in PLC and HMI systems design, programming, commissioning, and start-up including system hardware selection, I/O panels and subsystems layout, and wiring .
  • Excellent analytical, technical, problem-solving, research, and teamwork skills
  • Computer literate with advanced experience in:
  • AutoCAD and/or SolidWorks 3D CAD
  • MS Excel
  • Macro programming
  • MS Word
  • Computer programming knowledge, VBA, C++, LABVIEW, or similar
  • PLC programming (e.g., Allen Bradley, Siemens, and Panasonic)
  • Valid Industrial Electrician License an asset
  • Familiar with pneumatic machinery is an asset
  • Working knowledge of LEAN manufacturing and Design of Experiment methodology is an asset
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Driven self-starter with the ability to work independently or in a team environment
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and set priorities that align with business needs
