Role Purpose: The Material Preparation Technician will be responsible for operating machinery to cut, shape, and prepare steel materials according to specifications. This role plays a vital part in ensuring the quality and precision of our steel products, contributing to our overall production efficiency and safety.

Reports To: Shop Supervisor

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Operate various steel cutting and preparation machinery, including but not limited to band saws, circular saws, shears, etc.
  • Prepare steel materials for production, including measuring, marking, and cutting materials to specific dimensions and shapes according to job orders and engineering drawings.
  • Inspect finished steel products to ensure they meet quality and safety standards, reporting any defects or issues to the supervisor.
  • Safely move and transport materials and products using forklifts, cranes, or other material handling equipment.
  • Perform routine maintenance on equipment, keeping machinery in good working condition and reporting any maintenance or repair needs.
  • Follow all safety protocols and procedures to maintain a safe working environment, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and safe handling of materials.
  • Maintain accurate records of material specifications, cuts, and production data, ensuring that all relevant documentation is completed.
  • Work closely with other team members, including welders, fabricators, and supervisors, to ensure a smooth and efficient production process.
  • Maintain a general understanding of shop functions as they apply to our business.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or 1-2 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of workplace safety and safe lifting and handling procedures.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
  • Previous experience in steel cutting and material preparation is preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and job orders.
  • Proficiency in using measurement tools, such as tape measures and calipers.
  • Strong attention to detail and quality standards.
  • Physical fitness and the ability to lift heavy materials and stand for extended periods.
  • Forklift and overhead crane certification is a plus.
