Job Description

Join Our Team as a Process Leader Trainee for Ontario (new grads)!

About Us:
Convertus Group is Canada’s largest and most advanced operator, processing more than 500,000 tonnes of waste annually. From coast to coast, we operate 13 sites to produce over 200,000 tonnes of finished compost and over 80,000 GJ of Renewable Natural Gas. This is the equivalent of taking 15,000 cars off the road or avoiding 28 million litres of gasoline being consumed. Of the waste we receive, we recycle and recover approximately 90%, which translates to a significant positive environmental impact. Be a part of our groundbreaking journey!

Your Mission:
Are you passionate about sustainability and eager to make an impact? As a Process Leader Trainee, you can become a future leader in the organic waste industry. Gain hands-on experience managing daily operations to transform waste into high-quality compost and beneficial products. Learn technical aspects of composting, anaerobic digestion (AD), and biogas production. Collaborate with experienced leaders to develop essential skills and knowledge, setting the stage for a career in environmental sustainability and leadership.

Here’s what an ordinary day of work might look like:
  • Understand daily operations for converting organic waste into compost and biogas, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and landfill waste.
  • Assist in optimizing site functionality by participating in daily routines, shift change meetings and site leadership coordination.
  • Conduct daily SCADA audits, troubleshoot issues, and implement strategies to reduce energy consumption and improve efficiency.
  • Perform site audits and on-the-floor process checks to ensure protocol adherence and high environmental standards.
  • Assist in overseeing performance and conducting coaching meetings to promote sustainability.
  • Develop and maintain a process schedule for composting and anaerobic digestion (AD) tunnels, optimizing resources.
  • Prepare and update forecasts for incoming materials and plant mass balance using contract information, historical data, and seasonality.
  • Coordinate preventive and non-preventive maintenance with the Process Support Team to minimize downtime.
  • Investigate and troubleshoot process issues, implement corrective actions, and support continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Ensure permits for sampling and tests are completed, review test results, and ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Assist in accurate reporting of compliance data to regulatory bodies, demonstrating a commitment to environmental responsibility.
  • Anticipate future needs and trends, developing strategies for inventory, gas production, and water balance.
  • Draft and review Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for facility processes, ensuring compliance and responsible practices.
  • Demonstrate and encourage commitment to company values in all interactions.

This job is for you if:
  • You recently graduated with a post-secondary degree in sciences or a related field (biology, chemistry, environmental engineering, etc.).
  • You possess intermediate computer skills, particularly in MS Office and ERP.
  • You have knowledge of composting processes and biological processing of organic waste streams (an asset) and understand the value of compost and its by-products.
  • You have experience with SCADA and various measuring and control technologies (an asset).
  • You pay attention to detail, demonstrate leadership skills, and can coach team members.
  • You have a hands-on approach, are willing to walk the floor and lead by example and excel in planning and organizing tasks.
  • You have strong communication skills, both verbal and written, and possess a pragmatic, problem-solving attitude.
  • You are proactive, can work independently, are open to learning, not afraid to make mistakes, and are willing to ask for feedback.
  • You are quality-oriented and committed to high standards.
  • You are willing to travel – part of the training will be conducted at our sites in Ontario and BC.
  • You hold a valid Driver's License – it is a requirement.

Contract length: 12 months.
Compensation: 54K – 67K per year.
