Job Description

As an Intermediate Mechanical Product Development Engineer, you will leverage your expertise in mechanical engineering and product design to drive the development of cutting-edge plumbing products. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including design, manufacturing, and quality control, to create and refine products that enhance functionality, durability, and user experience. You will also utilize problem-solving tools, engineering change management processes, design verification and validation strategies, and contribute to creating Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Work Instructions (WIs) for consistent manufacturing and quality control.

What you'll do:

  • Product Design & Development: Lead the design, testing, and iteration of new plumbing products, ensuring compliance with engineering standards, regulatory requirements, and customer specifications. Apply problem-solving methodologies such as FMEA (Failure Modes and Effects Analysis) to identify potential risks early in the design process and mitigate them.
  • Prototyping & Testing: Create prototypes and conduct rigorous testing to validate design concepts and functionality. Use Design of Experiments (DOE) and other statistical tools to analyze and optimize test results, ensuring that products meet performance benchmarks.
  • Drawing Packages: Develop detailed drawing packages incorporating Design for Manufacturability (DFM), Design for Assembly (DFA), and Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) standards to ensure optimal product design, ease of manufacturing, and precise quality control.
  • Continuous Improvement: Continuously analyze existing product lines, identifying opportunities for enhancement in performance, cost-efficiency, and manufacturability. Implement corrective actions based on root cause analysis using problem-solving tools like 5 Whys or Fishbone Diagrams.
  • Engineering Change Management: Manage engineering changes through structured change control processes. Document and track changes, ensuring all modifications are thoroughly evaluated, communicated, and implemented while maintaining product integrity and compliance with quality standards.
  • Design Verification & Validation (V&V): Develop and execute Design Verification and Validation Plans (DV&VP) to ensure that products meet functional, safety, and regulatory requirements. Ensure that the design output aligns with customer requirements, including performance and durability specifications, and oversee final product testing.
  • Creating Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) & Work Instructions (WIs): Develop and maintain detailed Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Work Instructions (WIs) for product development and manufacturing processes to ensure consistency, safety, and quality across operations. Ensure that all steps are well-documented and easy to follow by both engineering and production teams.
  • Cross-functional Collaboration: Work closely with the R&D, manufacturing, Quality, Compliance, and marketing teams to ensure seamless product development from concept to market launch. Provide technical guidance to support manufacturing feasibility and process optimization.
  • CAD & Simulation: Utilize advanced CAD software (CREO) to create detailed 3D models and perform stress, thermal, and fluid flow simulations to assess product performance. Integrate simulation results into the design process to predict real-world behavior and enhance product reliability.
  • Documentation & Reporting: Maintain accurate engineering documentation, including specifications, design records, test reports, change orders, and the creation of work instructions and SOPs. Ensure all documentation is compliant with company standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Quality Assurance & Compliance: Ensure products meet all quality control standards and regulatory guidelines (e.g., NSF, UPC, ANSI, CSA), and oversee the testing process to ensure product reliability and durability. Collaborate with quality teams to perform root cause analysis and implement corrective actions.
  • Problem Solving & Innovation: Identify technical challenges and implement creative solutions to address design or production-related issues. Employ tools like Root Cause Analysis, 8D Problem Solving, and Failure Mode Effect Analysis to troubleshoot and improve product designs.
  • Project Management: Assist in managing project timelines, budgets, and resources to ensure products are delivered on schedule. Track project milestones and deliverables, addressing potential roadblocks proactively.

What will you bring:

  •  Education: Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or a related field (master’s degree is a plus).
  •  Experience: 3-7 years of experience in mechanical product development, preferably in the plumbing industry or in a similar field.
  • Strong proficiency in CAD software (CREO or similar).
  • In-depth understanding of mechanical design principles, materials, GD&T, and manufacturing processes.
  • Familiarity with plumbing industry standards and regulations.
  • Proficient in using problem-solving tools such as FMEA, 5 Whys, Fishbone Diagrams, and Root Cause Analysis.
  • Strong knowledge of product testing, prototyping, and validation techniques, including DV&VP.
  • Experience in developing and maintaining Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Work Instructions (WIs).
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for documentation and team collaboration.

What we offer:

  • Competitive compensation & reward plans
  • Defined Contribution Registered Pension Plan (Optional) with employer matching
  • Deferred Profit-Sharing Plan (DPSP)
  • Benefit Insurance coverage from Day 1 (Health, Dental, Travel Insurance)
  • Employee Assistance Program – a platform to help you be happier and healthier and perform your best through health and wellness resources.
