Apprentice Machinist

General description
The incumbent of this role is responsible for assisting in the set up and operation of various manual and CNC machines to perform operations such as turning, milling, drilling, tapping, grinding, spot facing, etc., to critical tolerances on ferrous and non-ferrous materials, using the necessary tools. In this role, the Apprentice Machinist is responsible for verifying the accuracy of the manufactured component against the blueprint or engineering drawings by measuring dimensions using precision measuring equipment.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
· Successful completion of Secondary School (Grade 12) or equivalent (GED). Successful candidates must provide proof of Grade 12 (or GED) to Ministry of Training Consultant to become a registered apprentice
· Have good mechanical ability and strong math skills
· Positive attitude towards new ideas
· Strong organizational and problem solving skills
· Strong communication skills
· Previous tooling/machine shop experience an asset
· Self-motivated and eager to learn
· Candidates must have a high commitment to safety for both themselves and others
· Keen eye for detail
· Ability to obtain Government security clearance
· Valid passport
Essential Duties:
The duties associated with this position include, but are not limited to:
· Take instruction from the Team Leader and/or Trainer in the department in which he/she is training;
· Complete the apprenticeship training standards as established by Ontario Ministry of Training
· With guidance from the assigned Trainer, read the blueprints and job instruction sheets to determine proper set up procedure, machining sequence, and dimensions of finished component
· With guidance from the assigned Trainer, perform set up and operation of conventional, special-purpose, and numerical control (NC) machines and machining centers to fabricate metallic and non-metallic parts, and fit and assemble machined parts into complete units
· With assistance, ensure effective production of quality parts by checking these parts to the blueprint or sketches, using gauges and measuring equipment
· Observes and listens to machine operation in order to detect malfunctions such as worn or damaged cutting tools when possible
· Notify Team Leader or when run times are incorrect and/or product will not meet time lines.
· Ensure machining tasks are completed in accordance with specified run times
· Conduct minor preventative maintenance procedures as scheduled
· Complete minor troubleshooting as required
· Report discrepancies to the appropriate department
· Ensure ISO guidelines are followed
· Comply with the company Health & Safety rules and regulations in accordance with the Act
· Support the team to achieve departmental goals
· Other duties as required
