The Electromagnetic Environmental Effects (E3) Associate Specialist/Engineer opening is a current vacant position at General Dynamics Land Systems – Canada (GDLS-C). You will be mentored by experts in the industry to identify and assess if electrical and electronic systems function correctly in their intended environments without interfering with other equipment.

Job Description

The Electromagnetic Environmental Effects (E3) role is responsible for ensuring that GDLS-C products meet applicable E3 requirements. As an entry-level position, you will be guided and mentored by technical subject matter experts. Your responsibilities as an E3 team member will include reviewing E3 requirements, collaborating with design engineers during development to ensure compliance with electromagnetic compatibility standards, conducting simulations, evaluating supplier and third-party compliance documentation, and developing and presenting E3 design assessments. Additionally, you will investigate issues to identify and implement risk mitigations.A key aspect of the E3 role involves E3 testing. This includes witnessing third-party testing, supporting customer testing and planning, as well as executing and reporting on GDLS-C-led vehicle-level E3 testing.

Key Job Elements:
  • Supports the review and development of the E3 requirements at component, sub-system and system (e.g. vehicle) level
  • Supports the design teams with E3 risk mitigation techniques, including Grounding and Bonding (G&B), shielding and harness separation
  • Reviews applicable standards (MIL, IEEE, SAE etc) for relevance and advises designers, suppliers and customers on limitations or need for tailored approaches to perform analysis or testing according to acceptable/negotiated deviations from standards
  • Prepares and presents E3 assessments at internal and customer design reviews
  • Reviews, provides feedback and approves suppliers/vendors E3 compliance artifacts
  • Expected to learn, on the job, to perform computer simulations to determine antenna placement, antenna radiation patterns and antenna cosite interference, Radiation Hazard (RADHAZ) to personnel (HERP), ordnances (HERO) and fuel (HERF), using simulation tools such as FEKO or CST Simulia
  • Develops component, sub-system and system (e.g. vehicle) test plans, executes internal and customer tests and develops and submits test reports
  • Sets up and employs test equipment such as vector network analyzer, spectrum analyzer, VSWR meters, oscilloscopes, power meters, power supplies, signal generators, micro-ohmmeters, RF amplifiers, LISNs, test antennas/transducers and high frequency E/H field probes
  • Supports the investigation, identification of the root cause(es) and implementation of solutions to address E3 issues on vehicles, sub-systems and components
  • Supports the assessment of E3 technical gaps and supports the technology, capability, and product roadmap activities to ensure the E3 team’s capabilities are relevant in an increasingly complex technical domain
Required Qualifications:
  • University Degree in a relevant engineering field (i.e. Electrical Engineering) or related discipline (i.e. Physics)
  • Strong interest in electromagnetism and its applications, and a willingness to learn and further their expertise
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Superior oral and written communication skills including effective presentations and technical report writing
  • High level of interpersonal skills to work effectively in a collaborative team environment
  • Proficiency in MS Office, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Willingness to travel occasionally (5% domestic, 5% international) and maintain a valid passport
Preferred Requirements:
  • Prior experience in using E3 mitigation techniques, simulation tools and testing
  • Strong understanding of electromagnetic theory and its applications
  • Familiarity with Systems Engineering and requirements management
  • Knowledge of E3 military standards (e.g. MIL-STD-461 ) or their commercial equivalents
  • Experience working with FEKO, CST Simulia or other E3 simulation tools
