Welding Quality Engineer

OVERVIEW

The Quality Engineering Welding role is primarily responsible for implementation and application of GDLS Quality Management System, supplier’s implementation and compliance with applicable welding standards, issue management and resolution, quality planning for bids and Programs, development and refinement of Product Assurance procedures and processes.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead activities to review and approve weld packages validating supplier AWS and CWB weld procedures and perform regular and ad-hoc supplier audits

  • Lead development and revision of quality clauses related to ballistic steel and welding based on GDLS QMS and specific contractual requirements

  • Provide assistance to supplier selection and mentoring/training of new weld fab suppliers

  • Review of various contractual requirements across multiple programs, clear understanding of deliverables, participate in joint meetings/ reviews with stakeholders to ensure products delivered meet all quality requirements

  • Oversee application and review of existing quality processes and procedures, identify opportunities for development and refinement of quality system processes

  • Oversee quality risk assessments impacts to design developments, procurement, and related changes

  • Support quality process & ISO related audits, and implement corrective actions/improvements

  • Provide support to material supply issues, initiate, coordinate and ensure actions and resolutions identified are completed in timely manner

  • Provide technical support / oversight for Engineering Changes related to welding, compliance or classification issues

  • Active participation in Quality Engineering Risk Meetings, providing support, guidance and direction

  • Manage customer issues and expectations, lead and address issues/concerns, and provide technical and procedural guidance

  • Maintain favorable working relationships with internal and external customer

Required Qualifications:

  • University Degree or College Diploma in Engineering

  • Familiarity with North American welding codes and specifications

  • Applied knowledge of welding processes (GMAW, GTAW, Friction Stir Welding, etc.) and associated weld materials

  • Strong communication, organization and prioritization skills

  • Technical knowledge of engineering drawings, materials, GD&T, testing

  • Ability to obtain Level II Security Clearance

  • Ability to travel (5% Cdn) and (5% US & Int'l) and possess/be able to acquire and maintain a valid passport

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certification as a Welding Inspector – AWS CWI and/or CWB CSA W178.2 Level II

  • Minimum 3-5 years relevant experience

  • Hands on welding experience or current welders' certification

  • Experience in a Unionized environment
