Job summary
Reporting to the Accounting & Finance Assistant Manager, the Accounting Specialist will be part of the Finance Team responsible for the day-to-day accounting needs of the business. The successful candidate will be a forward-thinker who has strong organizational skills, the ability to multitask effectively and communicate clearly (verbally and in writing) with others. The successful candidate will be a quick learner with an aptitude for numbers and a commitment to accuracy.

Major duties and responsibilities
  • Expense reporting, following up on any receiving/pricing discrepancies or omissions.
  • Generate month-end accrual journal entries and assist in the preparation of internal records and reports.
  • Ensure all key balance sheet accounts are properly maintained, updated, and reconciled on a monthly basis.
  • Prepare and maintain budgets for comparison against actual results, analyze variance to budget and/or forecasting, and document explanations.
  • Supports the annual planning and monthly forecasting initiatives by assisting in Sales / COGS verification, departmental expenses, labour costs, Freight, and scrap analysis.
  • Assist in audits (Year-end and Quarterly), Inventory Audits, Fixed Asset Audits. Work with internal and external stakeholders
  • Maintain costing file, analyze new bill of materials, and update standard costing.
  • Assist with management of capital assets which include CIP, capitalization, audits, transfers, and disposals.
  • Supports the Plant Controller with ad-hoc reporting and monthly report preparation.
  • Supports Physical Inventory, Internal and External Audit events in coordination with the Plant Controller and Production Control team.
  • Occasional overtime is required around month-end closing and other projects. Overtime time is paid at 1.5 times the regular wage after 40 hours each week.
Qualifications
To help us learn more about you, please provide a cover letter and resume outlining how you meet the following specific qualifications:
  • College diploma or university degree in accounting or business-related, CPA considered an asset but not required.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of related work experience in the accounting/payroll field, including experience with general accounting, budget preparation/review, cost analysis, inventory management, and/or fixed asset management. Strong organizational and multi-task skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • General understanding and working knowledge of basic accounting principles.
  • Strong customer service orientation with both internal and external customers.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Proficiency in MS Excel is a must.
  • MS Access (database management) is an asset.
  • Solid working knowledge and experience with MS Office and other computer-based applications (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Internet, etc.).
