Role Summary

The Health & Safety Coordinator is responsible for all aspects of the facility’s health and safety management systems, to ensure company health and safety compliance in all levels of governmental legislation. The coordinator is a member of the Joint Health, Safety, Ergonomics and Environmental Committees and works closely with the health and wellness to reintegrate injured personnel to the workplace.

Key Qualifications/Requirements

  1. Successful completion of post secondary education in the field of Occupational Health, Safety and Environmental Management, or equivalent work-related experience and training.
  2. Minimum three (3) years work-related experience in a manufacturing environment, preferably automotive – an asset.
  3. CRSP designation or equivilant a definite asset.
  4. Must be able to apply knowledge and skills to the detection and solution of general and technical problems, must also be able to operate required measuring instruments, conduct testing/sampling, gather data, interpret analysis and legislation requirement/applications, write reports, make recommendations, and suggest improvements.
  5. Maintain updates in specified field technology and legislative changes.
  6. Knowledge and experience in applying ESA, Human Rights, OHSA and applicable regulations as well as WSIB policies and procedures. 
  7. Strong interpersonal, communication and organization skills.
  8. Must be able to meet tight deadlines and cope with stressful situations postively and proactively.
  9. Proficient in Microsoft Office programs, Windows and Web-based applications, portals and various software programs as required.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Develops and implements, maintains, and coordinates the health and safety management system for the anticipation, recognition, evaluation and control of hazards.
  2. Assists with the development and maintenance of the Division’s safety policies/procedures and ensures communication
  3. Analyse and update Health & Wellness related statistics/KPI and makes recommendations as required.
  4. Analyzes of accident statistics/type/frequency/severity and makes recommendations as required.
  5. Reports on aspects of the health and safety management system to the Human Resources Leader and the management team (eg. corrective actions, continuous improvement programs).
  6. Ensures health and safety legislative compliance and acts as a liaison with government agencies and corporate in the interest of the company’s health and safety affairs. Leads in the MOL/EPA visits, workplace inspections and investigations. Ensures and maintains accurate records to provide documentation and accountability in support of findings and conclusions
  7. Prepares for internal and external audits related to H&S/Ergonomics/Environmental & IATF (Identifies aspects, impacts, etc.). Including Management Review of the Environmental Management Program.
  8. Claims management of WSIB claims including submissions, correspondence, and liaison with the Worker’s Safety and Insurance Board.

9.Coordinate the return-to-work program for employees by working in cooperation with the employee, department Leader, the employee’s medical practitioners and WSIB.

10.Provides health and safety training of personnel

13.Coordinates external services for annual and bi-annual sampling/testing/assessments (i.e., air and noise sampling, air emission, waste disposal, wastewater, hearing conservation program, medicals, etc.). Ensures that the samples are taken, information shared with the leadership team and the JHSEEC.

15.Promotes/recommends continuous improvement suggestions including environment, people, processes, and equipment/machinery and ensures departmental continuous improvements are implemented, thereby fostering a continuous improvement culture within their area of responsibility.

16.Reviews departmental/business unit investigations of accidents/incidents/spills, etc. and follows up to ensure investigations are conducted thoroughly, the reports are detailed, and all leads are followed up to ensure an inclusive investigation was conducted. All documents are prepared and submitted to file to ensure support for legal compliance. Co-operates in the preparation of material/evidence for use in hearings and insurance investigations.

The Health and Safety Coordinator works under the general direction of the Human Resources Department Leader performing a variety of health and safety tasks. The work requires independent judgement and knowledge with understanding of department/plant functions. The Health and Safety Coordinator must possess good communication skills, both verbal and written to exchange and/or collect information from a variety of contacts (internal and external). The Coordinator is responsible for confidentiality of personnel information. The Coordinator works in an office environment and spends variable periods of time throughout the plant area where there is exposure to workplace elements such as temperatures and noise.
