Product Development Engineering Technologist
About the job
As a member of our Product Development team, you will support Product Development projects through execution and documentation of experiments, design and validation of test fixtures and updating mechanical and electrical CAD files.
Responsibilities Include:
EXPERIMENT EXCUTION
- Develop experimental plan with project DRE (Design Responsible Engineer)
- Document samples, results and observations during experiment.
- Setup, maintain and learn new, mechanical or electrical measurement equipment
- Work with vendors to setup and execute experiments
- Review results with design responsible engineer (DRE) and document conclusions to inform next set of experiments
- Present completed experiments and implications on design to peers and management.
TEXTURE DESIGN
- Design and assemble electrical and mechanical test fixtures and machines to aid in autonomous testing
- Collaborate with DRE and Manufacturing Engineering to incorporate potential prototype assembly line requirements
- Use solid works, PCBA design software and engineering know-how
- Verify equipment and calibrate if necessary, documenting and obtaining safety approval
- Create work instructions and perform training to other team members on the use and maintenance of the fixture or machine.
ELECTRICAL TESTING, REWORK AND TROUBLESHOOTING
- Perform soldering (SMD, through-hole), board reworks for prototypes
- Use lab equipment (oscilloscope, logic analyzer, multimeter) to test and debug electronic circuits
- Troubleshoot hardware failures at component and board level, assist with root-cause analysis
- Support bring-up and functional verification of newly assembled PCBAs.
TECHNICAL ADMINISTRATION
- Update solid works files to reference a dimension, note or geometry change
- Update PCBA drawings to reference design or note changes
- Update controlled documents related to projects or departmental processes
- Document work, knowledge and know-how using templates and tools developed with-in the department.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Diploma or Degree in mechanical, mechatronic, or electrical engineering/technologist
- 3 or more years of experience in a Product Development or Introduction, or Manufacturing Engineering.
- Experience using machine shop equipment including drill presses, milling machines, and related equipment
- Experience in 3D Printing, casting, assembling, surface preparation and finishing
- Proven electronic/mechanical design and assembly know-how
- Excellent soldering skills, including SMD rework and fine-pitch components
- Computer literate with:
- Experience with 3D CAD packages (SolidWorks preferred)
- Experience with Altium or similar PCBA design tools
- Intermediate to advanced experience in MS Office applications
- 3D Printing setup and management related software
- CNC milling software experience is an asset
- Arduino, Raspberry Pi, Teensy
- Python, Matlab, Control systems (PID), embedded systems, data acquisition
- Ability to work with and understand statistical computations
- Good communication and interpersonal skills, both verbal and written, with the ability to work independently or as part of a team
- Good organization and time management skills
- Demonstrated ability to work in a consistently thorough and precise manner.
