Role Purpose: General machinists cut, shape and finish metal to make precision-machined parts and components used in all areas of manufacturing. They read and interpret complex engineering drawings and work-process documentation, set up and operate both conventional and numerically controlled metal-cutting machines and equipment (including saws, drills, grinders, lathes and mills), and perform work-in-process measuring or checking.

Reports To: Department Team Leader

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications.
  • Verify machined parts for conformance to specifications using precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, and electronic measuring devices/gauges.
  • Uses precision tools, machinery and equipment such as lathe, vertical milling machine, drill press, hydraulic press, chop saw, band saw, and a variety of cutting tools and equipment.
  • Analyze specifications and decide on tooling according to knowledge of shop mathematics, metal properties, and machining procedures.
  • Properly and safely aligns, secures and removes holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories and materials onto machines.
  • Performs daily and regular cleaning and light maintenance tasks on machinery and equipment.
  • Evaluate experimental procedures and recommend change or modifications for efficiency and adaptability to setup and production
  • Fit and assemble or disassemble parts using hand tools.
  • Operate grinding machinery to smooth or polish the surface of products.
  • Operate fork truck and cranes.
  • Follow all OHSA regulations and company Health & Safety policies and procedures.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or 1-2 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Understands and can interpret mechanical drawings.
  • Ability to perform basic mathematical computations.
  • Previous experience as a general machinist an asset (i.e. high school co-op)
