Finance Manager – Cost Accounting
Location: Either Strathroy, ON or Toronto, ON

WeedMD Inc. is the publicly traded parent company of WeedMD Rx Inc. and Starseed Medicinal Inc., licence holders producing and distributing cannabis products for both the medical and adult-use markets. The Company owns and operates a 158-acre state-of-the-art greenhouse, outdoor and processing facility located in Strathroy, ON as well as a fully licensed 26,000 sq.ft. Aylmer, ON processing facility, specializing in cannabis extraction. With the addition of Starseed, a medical-centric operator, WeedMD has expanded its multi-channeled distribution strategy. The Company maintains strategic relationships in the seniors’ market and supply agreements with Shoppers Drug Mart as well as seven provincial distribution agencies where its adult-use brands Color Cannabis and Saturday are sold.
Summary
Reporting directly to the Controller, the Cost Accounting Manager is responsible for providing direction to management regarding cost determination, inventory valuation, and overhead allocation. The role includes performing functional analysis of period business results and providing insights and analysis to senior management in order to maintain financial statement integrity. This role will closely partner with cross functional teams to ensure the accurate capture of direct and indirect costs. In addition, there will be an expectation to drive business process improvements across all areas of responsibility. The role will also work closely with the FP&A Team and Commercial Team on financial feasibility for innovation and renovation launches.
Job Duties
- Primary interaction with cross-functional teams to provide analysis/insight on period business results, accounting, and controls knowledge to drive financial performance
- Lead periodic and quarterly meetings on inventory and cost of sales
- Planning, studying, and collecting data to determine product costs such as raw material purchases, inventory and labour
- Analyzing changes in product design, raw materials, manufacturing methods or services provided, to determine effects on product cost
- Analyzing actual manufacturing costs and preparing periodic reports comparing standard costs to actual production costs
- Recording cost information for use in controlling expenditures
- Making estimates of new and proposed product costs
- Providing management with reports specifying and comparing factors affecting prices and profitability of products or services
- Maintaining the Cost Accounting System
- Assisting in Period end close of the General Ledger
- Reconciling finished goods inventories
- Ensuring compliance and integrity with company Internal Control policies and documentation
- Explaining financials and reserves to internal and external audit
- Ensuring that all monthly, quarterly, and annual financial accounting activities are completed in a timely and accurate manner
- Assisting in the preparation of annual budgets, lending technical and analytical expertise for the development of labor efficiencies, rates, overhead and raw materials
- Involved in cost and inventory controls the company has in place, including physical inventory counts and cycle count programs as applicable
- Reviewing financial data for accuracy, correctness, and completeness
- Documenting policies and procedures, and assist with cross training as required
Experience, Education and Designations:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance and Accounting Designation are a must
- At least 8+ years in progressive roles in business planning and finance business partnering
Knowledge, Skills and Attributes:
- Ability to manage multiple changing priorities in a fast-paced environment with high tolerance for ambiguity
- Must be highly skilled in MS Excel, PowerPoint
- Strong technical knowledge and expertise of financial transaction reporting related to manufacturing, inventory, and supply chain costs, including IFRS biological asset accounting (cannabis cost accounting experience an asset)
- Excellent communication skills, ability to communicate with a diverse employee base ranging from site resources to senior management
- Ability to work effectively with field cross-functional teams
- Must have experience presenting to senior level management
- Ability to manage and build relationships across all levels of the organization
