WeedMD Inc. is the publicly-traded parent company of WeedMD Rx Inc., a federally-licensed producer of cannabis products for both the medical and adult-use markets. The Company owns and operates a 158-acre state-of-the-art greenhouse, outdoor and processing facility located in Strathroy, Ontario. WeedMD also operates CX Industries Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of WeedMD Inc., from the Company’s fully-licensed 26,000 sq. ft. Aylmer, Ontario production facility which specializes in cannabis extraction and processing. With the recent acquisition of Starseed Medicinal Inc., a medical-centric licensed holder with operations in Bowmanville, Ontario, WeedMD has expanded its multi-channeled distribution strategy. Starseed’s industry-first, exclusive partnership with LiUNA, the largest construction union in Canada, along with other employers and union groups complements WeedMD’s direct sales to medical patients. The Company maintains strategic relationships across the seniors’ market and supply agreements with Shoppers Drug Mart as well as six provincial distribution agencies where its adult-use brands Color Cannabis and Saturday are sold.

Summary

The Manager, External Reporting, consolidates and prepares periodic (monthly, quarterly, and annual) financial statements required for external reporting to shareholders and other stakeholders through regulatory filings. Collects and analyses financial data, ensuring that all reporting is in compliance with OSC and IFRS reporting and guidelines. The Manager communicates with external auditors on external financial statements and accounting issues to ensure auditor agreement with company decisions on accounting disclosures, and issues. This individual also assists in the coordination of annual audit and quarterly review activities of external auditors.

Job Duties

External Financial Reporting

  • Compile and review the supporting schedules, content and notes for the external financial statements and the MD&A
  • Lead and own the enterprise consolidation for subsidiaries
  • Maintain the Finance Policy and Procedures Manual and act as a technical accounting advisory contact for all levels of the organization
  • Lead researching technical accounting issues under IFRS, including the preparation of accounting memos and policies to support business initiatives
  • Monitor developments in accounting standards to assess potential impacts to the business and lead the implementation of new accounting standards
  • Own completion of inventory, bio-assets, stock-based compensation, financial instruments, equity and other key financial reporting sections and disclosures
  • Liaise with external auditors to support the quarterly review and annual audit process
  • Liaise with legal department on external reporting regulations and guidelines (CSA and OSC) to assess potential impacts on external reporting
  • Execute KPI, competitor reporting, analytics, ad hoc reports and proactively identify value-add business insights and present to management

Internal Audit

  • Identify and reduce all business and financial risks through effective implementation and monitoring of controls
  • Develop, implement, and maintain internal audit policies and procedures in accordance with local and international best practice
  • Create a strong business partnership to drive ownership of internal control policies and procedures

Process Improvement

  • Support teams in identifying, verifying, analyzing, and implementing process improvement and process re-engineering opportunities
  • To streamline accounting processes and implement consistency in methodology across the company
  • Other duties as required

Requirements

  • CPA, C.A. designation plus minimum three (3) + years of post-qualification experience at a public company and/or public accounting firm
  • Experience with external reporting is required
  • SOX or internal control experience is preferred
  • Demonstrated experience in external financial reporting and analysis with a strong knowledge of IFRS accounting principles and practices
  • Solid technical accounting knowledge and the ability to interpret complex technical accounting issues and implement practical solutions
  • Previous experience working with IFRS and OSC Continuous Disclosure requirements is required
  • Desire and ability to work in a fast-paced environment, in an ambiguous and developing structure
  • Proven track record as a people manager as well as an individual contributor
  • Self-starter, well-organized with excellent attention to detail and a continuous process improvement mindset
  • Proficient in financial modelling in Microsoft Excel
  • Direct, relevant experience with working in mid- to large-scale ERP systems is required, Sage X3 would be an asset
  • Ability to comfortably interact with senior management in a professional manner
  • Track record of meeting tight working deadlines, and prioritizing workload are essential
  • Experience working in a public company or large Public Accounting Firm supporting public company reporting is required
  • Some travel may be required
