Packaging Development Specialist

Dessert Holdings is a leading baked goods platform providing premium layer cakes, cheesecakes, brownies, bars, and other desserts to the retail in-store bakery ("ISB") and foodservice channels on a largely private label basis. We are a rapidly growing company comprised of The Original Cakerie (acq. December 2015), Lawler's Foods (acq. July 2016), and Atlanta Cheesecake Company (acq. We are looking for a Packaging Development Specialist for our London, Ontario location.  The primary function of this position is to develop and qualify packaging solutions based on customer insights and market requirements for Dessert Holdings. This position will provide packaging options and develop high quality packages to support innovation initiatives.  This position will support existing business through packaging renovations and cost improvement projects, including: Drive Innovation and New Formats: Build forward looking Packaging Design Capability to enable proactive product/package development to bring continued premium value to the market. Realize cost/production efficiencies: Optimize current packaging format within new realities of external expectations and internal capabilities. Realize cost/production efficiencies.

Key Technical Responsibilities and Contributions

  • Plans and directs activities concerned with design and development of protective packaging
  • Consults with purchasing, engineering and continuous improvement departments to determine feasibility of proposed packaging
  • Develops die lines, specifications, samples, and written analyses of proposed packaging
  • Advises employer or customers on efficient packaging procedures, innovations, and materials
  • Performs change management to implement packaging and process improvements
  • Fully understands both consumer and customer expectations of packaging for desserts and baked goods
  • Maintains awareness of developments in the packaging industry
  • Supports product development throughout the new product process, including plant trials
  • Reviews and optimizes current packaging materials with a focus on standardization
  • Identifies opportunities to implement sustainable packaging materials and improve sustainability story of current packaging
  • Works within platforms and processes to comply with regulatory and customer packaging requirements
  • Balances innovation, sustainability, risk management, benefit, and cost
  • Works closely with suppliers to support timely project implementation and quality control
  • Organizes and conducts trials for new packaging

Educational Requirements:

Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or Science, or Diploma in Packaging Engineering

Experience Requirements:

Minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience within a CPG company

Special Knowledge and Skills

Must have:

  • Proficient with MS Office, CAPE
  • Excellent verbal and written communications
  • Strong understanding of packaging materials and supplier processes
  • Technical competence in food packaging systems and packaging materials
  • Self-motivated, ability drive packaging projects through the development process
  • Able to travel as required to other Dessert Holdings facilities


  • Navision experience an asset
  • Experience with operating or troubleshooting industrial packaging equipment an asset
