Summary of Position
The Production Buyer plays a critical role in ensuring the smooth and efficient operation of a manufacturing facility by securing the timely procurement of materials, components, and services required for production. By balancing cost, quality, and delivery performance, the Production Buyer supports uninterrupted production flow, minimizes downtime, and contributes directly to meeting customer demand and organizational goals.
Reporting to the London Plant Manager, the Production Buyer is responsible for sourcing and purchasing raw materials, components, and supplies required for production operations. This role plays a critical part in ensuring that the London manufacturing facility receives materials on time, at the right quality and cost, to support uninterrupted production. The ideal candidate is proactive, detail-oriented, thrives in a fast-paced environment, and leverages a strong understanding of supply chain dynamics.
Responsibilities:
Procurement Planning & Execution
- Analyze raw material coverage and issue purchase orders in accordance with production requirements, demand forecasts, and production schedules
- Ensure timely delivery of materials to meet production targets
- Monitor open orders and expedite or delay shipments as necessary
- Manage the inventory, replenishment and purchase of non-stock items including consumables, maintenance supplies, office supplies and services in support of the facility
Supplier Management
- Source and evaluate suppliers to ensure quality, cost-effectiveness, and reliability
- Build and maintain strong relationships with key vendors
- Resolve delivery or quality issues quickly and effectively
Inventory & Cost Management
- Manage raw material inventory targets in partnership with Supply Chain
- Optimize inventory by balancing production needs and inventory levels
- Collaborate with supply planning and production teams to avoid shortages or overstock situations
- Act proactively to identify and drive purchasing cost reduction initiatives
- Coordinate efforts with peer buyers across the organization to consolidate purchases, negotiate volume-based pricing, and reduce overall procurement costs
- Work with peer buyers to balance inventory across plants and minimize excess at a network level
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work closely with supply planning, quality, logistics, maintenance and engineering teams to align parts, supplies and material availability with plant needs and production goals
- Provide timely updates on procurement status and risks
- Partner with peers across the business to drive consistency across operations
Compliance & Documentation
- Maintain accurate procurement records and documentation in SAP
- Ensure compliance with company policies, ethical sourcing standards, and applicable regulations
Position Requirements:
- Post-secondary education in Supply Chain, Business, or a related field
- 3+ years purchasing/supply chain experience in a manufacturing environment
- Experience with SAP/MRP and kanban systems
- Certification in supply chain (e.g., SCMP, CPIM, CPSM) is an asset
- Excellent communication and organizational abilities
- Knowledge of production processes, BOMs, and lead time planning
- Strong negotiation and analytical skills
- Proactive attitude with a high sense of urgency and initiative
- Advanced user of Microsoft Office software (Excel, Word, PowerPoint)
