Mechanical Design Group Lead
Description
Lead a group of mechanical designers to perform mechanical design for projects and new business, while supporting other groups, and growing the capabilities of the mechanical design group and BOS.
- Working lead of the mechanical team so holds both leadership responsibilities and technical hands on responsibilities
- Develops and completes quality mechanical designs while appropriately and thoughtfully distributing project work to the team
- Provide guidance and oversight, including review of Finite Element Analysis, for design team throughout project phases
- Ensure designers understand and adhere to project scope/customer specifications
- Guide solution development during project execution when designers face roadblocks
- Develop Standards/Methods/Processes to be used within the greater mechanical design team to achieve department goals
- Develop and maintain tools/instruments/software/supplies and develop systems to manage them.
- Communicate with other leads to ensure consistency and alignment of scope, schedule, and sequencing of activities
- Ensure that team members are actively participating in whiteboard meetings and that project leads are presenting their status/issues list, following the white board process
- Meet weekly with all Department leads and Automation Design Manager to discuss scheduling, workload and group systems/processes
- Meet once a month with all BOS Group Leads to review/discuss process improvement: where we are at, what is working, issues/roadblocks of group, structure (is it working), where we are headed, suggestions for improvement, etc.
- Approve and adjust budget for the mechanical design and purchases portion of projects, following budget adjustment process
- Involved as a Subject Matter Expert with the Apps team to assist in the solution preparation and technical support
- Team member of the kickoff team, inputs to budget, and provides insights regarding resources and ongoing costs
- Follow Systems engineering lead on identified design risks, to ensure required mitigation is implemented
- Ensure design review, reach studies, and simulation process applicable to the design element are completed before drawing package of the design element is released and verify all checklist tasks are completed by the group
- Understand project scope & customer specifications
- Purchasing for projects being designed, and approvals for the group, following the purchasing process
- Track lessons learned and SRED notes
Requirements
- Degree or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering/Design
- Minimum 10 years in automation design
- Minimum 10 years project experience in mechanical design (proficiency in SolidWorks and PDM preferred)
- Minimum 2 years of leadership experience
- Strong technical, leadership, written and verbal communication skills
- Experience in manufacturing and application of GD&T
