Role Summary

The Health & Safety Coordinator is responsible for all aspects of the facility’s health and safety management systems, to ensure company health and safety compliance in all levels of governmental legislation. The coordinator is a member of the Joint Health, Safety, Ergonomics and Environmental Committees and works closely with the health and wellness to reintegrate injured personnel to the workplace.

Key Qualifications/Requirements

  1. Successful completion of post-secondary education in the field of Occupational Health, Safety and Environmental Management, Ergonomics or Human Resources Management with equivalent work-related experience and training.

  2. Minimum three (3) years work-related expereience in a maunfacturing environment, preferrably automotive.

  3. CRSP designation or equivilant a definite asset.

  4. Must be able to apply knowledge and skills to the detection and solution of general and technical problems, must also be able to operate required measuring instruments, conduct testing/sampling, gather data, interpret analysis and legislation requirement/applications, write reports, make recommendations, and suggest improvements.

  5. Maintain updates in specified field technology and legislative changes.

  6. Knowledge and experience in applying ESA, Human Rights, OHSA and applicable regulations as well as WSIB policies and procedures.

  7. Able to work in a strictly confidential and professional manner 

  8. Strong interpersonal, communication and organization skills.

  9. Must be able to meet tight deadlines and cope with stressful situations postively and proactively.

  10. Proficient in Microsoft Office programs, Windows and Web-based applications, portals and various software programs as required

General Duties

  1. Prepares for internal and external audits related to H&S & Environmental (Identifies aspects, impacts, etc.). Including Management Review of the H&S & Environmental Management Program.

  2. Ensures that all team members are trained and competent in conjunction with their job requirements. Demonstrates commitment to sharing knowledge and experiences, to train and encourage growth in others.   Required training has been completed as per schedule. 

  3. Supports where required: external services for annual and bi-annual sampling/testing/assessments (i.e., air and noise sampling, medicals, etc.). Ensures that the samples are taken, information shared with the leadership team and the JHSEEC. The results are posted as required.

  4. Ensures representation for:  applicable Engineering Gate reviews, Pre-start safety inspections, etc. Participates in equipment design reviews and PSHSR to ensure that equipment/facility meets current legislation and applicable CSA Standards. 

  5. Participates in MAGNA EAC Safety Group as required

  6. Assists with the development and maintenance of the Division’s safety policies/procedures and ensures communication.

  7. Aid in the development and management of environmental objectives and targets and associated programs.

  8. Participates in the monthly HR Departmental meetings, provides input into the development of the EE meetings and presented information as required.

Key Responsibilities

  1. Manages and administers professional health and safety services, respecting confidences and advises honestly.

  2. Reviews departmental/business unit investigations of accidents/incidents/spills, etc. and follows up to ensure investigations are conducted thoroughly, the reports are detailed, and all leads are followed for an inclusive investigation.  All documents are prepared and submitted to file to ensure support for legal compliance.  Additional recommendations are provided to leaders if applicable and an action plan with targeted completion dates. Co-operates in the preparation of material/evidence for use in hearings and insurance investigations.

  3. Help ensure compliance to environmental legal requirements and liaison with government agencies and corporate personnel as required in the interest of the company’s environmental affairs.ie, NPRI, Waste audits, Certificates of Approval.

  4. Claims management of WSIB claims including submissions, correspondence, and liaison with the Worker’s Safety and Insurance Board. Coordinate the return-to-work program for employees by working in cooperation with the employee, department supervisor,  the employee’s medical practitioners and WSIB. Follow up with employees upon their return-to-work by visiting them on the shop floor and monitoring their progress to ensure a successful return-to-work.  Manages WSIB legislative compliance and acts as a liaison with government agencies and corporate in the interest of the company’s health and safety affairs.

  5. Collaborate with various departments or other resources to implement effective corrective actions to eliminate H&S hazards. Train internal and external groups on Presstran Industries environmental standards.

  6. Develops and implements, maintains, and coordinates the health and safety management system for the anticipation, recognition, evaluation, and control of hazards.

  7. Leads in the MOL visits, workplace inspections and investigations.  Ensures and maintains accurate records to provide documentation and accountability in support of findings and conclusions.   Has built a relationship with external government representatives and Magna/Cosma representatives responsible for Presstran.
