Description
Key Job Elements:
- Lead and develop the Environmental Health and Safety team through goal setting, training, coaching and providing regular performance feedback.
- Work collaboratively with all employees including the Unifor Health and Safety representative, Whole System Business Model (WSBM) teams and Joint Health and Safety Committees to proactively identify improvements and effectively resolve Environmental, Health and Safety issues.
- Ensure compliance with all Environmental, Health and Safety legislation, regulations and procedures including Workplace Safety and Insurance Board requirements
- Develop, implement and review policies and procedures related to Environmental, Health and Safety organizationally and for specific departmental needs to ensure the continued effectiveness of the Company’s Environmental, Health & Safety Management systems
- Partner with Human Resources and departmental managers in the accommodation of employees with disabilities in the workplace including proactive ergonomic assessments and workspace modifications
- Lead engagement with Environmental, Wellness, and Health & Safety strategic partners including the GDLS-C medical centre, environmental consultants and auditors.
- Act as a member of the QEHSEn core team and participate in both internal and external audits as required
- Work collaboratively with the security team to ensure strong emergency response for GDLS-C
- Engage with all levels within the company as well as external organizations including regulatory agencies
- Investigate Violence and Harassment complaints and report findings
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelors degree with a specialization in Occupational Health and Safety, Kinesiology, Environmental Engineering, Science, Industrial Hygiene or other related field
- At least 5 years of experience in a Safety leadership position directly supervising Safety and/or Environmental professionals
- Extensive experience dealing with outside governing agencies (Ministry of Labour, Ministry of Environment, Workplace Social Insurance Board, and the development OHSA plans)
- Registered professional certification from a nationally recognized board (Canadian Registered Safety Professional, Associate Safety Professional, Occupational Safety and Health Technician, Certified Industrial Hygienist or similar certification) or working towards
- Strong project management skills
- Exceptional investigative skills
- Strong understanding of OHSAS 18001 and/or ISO 45001 Health & Safety standards and/or ISO 14001 environmental standards
- Effective problem solving, collaboration, conflict resolution and facilitation skills
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Preferred Qualifications:
- Joint Health and Safety Committee Certification Level II
- Previous experience working in a unionized environment
- Previous experience working in a manufacturing environment with the following processes: fabrication, welding, mechanical/electrical assembly and test.
- Understanding of Environmental Compliance Agreements (ECA’s) and National Pollutant Release Inventory (NPRI) reporting requirements
