Assistant Controller
  • Come build the future with us! We are looking for a dynamic Assistant Controller who is passionate about managing a market leading product portfolio that consumers love. Reporting to Controller, you will join a rapidly growing and developing team.

     

    The Assistant Controller is responsible for the accounting of all product/service costing. This position supports operations Team in reviewing, analyzing, and reporting on inventory valuation, inventory transactions, direct and indirect labor, direct material and subcontract costs, and other overhead costs incurred in the operational segment.

     

    The Assistant Controller provides financial analysis and leadership in cost control, analysis on changes that affect prices and profitability of products and assists with month-end closing and reporting as it relates to inventory and cost of sales. We are looking for a team player with strong financial acumen, innovative ideas, excellent communication skills, and a drive to win. 

     

    What You Will Bring: 

    • Minimum Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Accounting or related field required

    • Minimum of 8 years full time experience in cost accounting and / or general accounting

    • Working knowledge of finance, accounting, internal audit, budgeting, and cost control principles including Canadian and U.S. Generally Accepted Accounting Principles, federal and provincial financial and taxation regulations.

    • Experience in the manufacturing and distribution industry preferred

    • Knowledge of purchasing, receiving, inventory flow required

    • Ability to work within a highly SKU intensive environment

    • Work experience with Operations preferred

    • Advanced knowledge in all aspects of indirect costs, analyses and reporting required

    • Strong written and verbal skills to communicate with all levels of the organization

    • Effective written and verbal communication skills as well as presentation skills.

    • Highly flexible, with solid interpersonal skills that allow one to work effectively in a diverse working environment

    • Ability to work efficiently as a part of a team as well as independently

    • Computer literacy, including effective working skills of MS Word, PowerPoint and Microsoft Outlook required with advanced Excel skills.  Knowledge of JD Edwards ERP systems an asset

    • Attention to detail in all areas of work

    What You Will Do: 

    Financial Close Responsibilities: (30%)

    • Lead and Collaborate with Plant Operational Team and Finance Team for efficient close of Financial Period (Month-end, Quarter-end and Year-end).

    • Review and approval of Financial JEs and analysis of the close process.

    • Owns of Inventory Reconciliation Process and lead the Inventory Optimization Project with Supply Chain Operational Team.

    • Co-Pilot with Controller to efficiently manage the financial close activities including business review commentary for month-end variance.

    • Accountable for HFM load accuracy and resolve any issues in timely manner.

     

    Cost Analysis Responsibilities (20%)

    • Prepare cost estimates of products and/or services to establish pricing and production / sales forecasts

    • Manage operational accounting and divisional costing

    • Calculate burden rates, set up expense budgets for production and service departments

    • Custodian of the costing system ensuring accurate costs for bills of materials, routings, new capital and tooling requests

    • Allocate costs as required and categorize costs into wages, material and overhead

    • Perform all aspects of cost accounting including the preparation, review and analysis of product inventory costing, standard costing, overhead allocation and variance analysis.

    • Develop and maintain cost analysis tools for efficiency

     

    Financial Analysis Responsibilities: (20%)

    • Owns operating variances, strategic sourcing opportunities, and logistics expenditures and identify opportunities for improvement.

    • Actively participating the development of ROI and pricing strategies.

    • Lead analysis for the planning of expansion and automation

    • Approval of standard cost analysis manage standard cost updates for a highly SKU intensive business

    • Responsible for all Statistical Canada’s Report

    • Oversee the Capital Acquisition Request process and maintenance of the capital assets sub-ledger and reporting as administered by the General Accountant

    • Develop and Improve the intercompany transfer pricing process and provide expert comments on change in TP year over year. 

    • Develop and maintain tools for overhead spending and labor cost

     

    Leadership Responsibilities: (10 %)

    • Manage and supervise the Costing Dept.

    • Develop the future leader by providing training and motivating the Costing Dept.

    • Being role Model for the Finance Team by developing internal performance metrics for Costing Team; identify problem areas and take appropriate action.

    • Actively participating quarterly and yearly performance review of the Group and liaison for Performance Review meeting organized by CFO.

    • Sustain professional and technical knowledge through workshops, seminars, associations, research and professional publications

     

    Adhoc Responsibilities: (10 %)

    • Provide support for other accounting and finance projects as assigned

    • Participate in meetings, providing input and recommendations

    • Provide for the system and process enhancements in order to generate accurate cost accounting information
