Senior Purchasing Buyer

Primary Purpose of Position

To secure timely and economical delivery of plant materials, supplies, and equipment to maintain adequate and cost-effective stockroom inventory. To ensure appropriate documentation is in place prior to materials being received.

Major Responsibilities of Position
• Procurement: co-ordination of purchasing activities with approved supplier base. Negotiate best pricing and discount, with supply base – applying principles of buying, inventory control & transportation. Continuous review of procurements to ensure appropriate negotiations conducted, issues resolved with supply base. Find and promote more efficient purchasing systems and technologies. Managing the procurement of materials/supplies to ensure quality, cost, delivery requirements specifications are in the best interest of Meridian. Issue purchase orders from properly authorized requisitions
 Purchasing Assistance: Providing guidance and all necessary information to employees for filling out orders for non-stock items, ensuring they are properly filled out.
 Inventory / Ordering: Ensure inventory levels are appropriate and reporting is accurate. Review stockroom purchase report; invoices and approve payment. Ensure inventory counts are conducted in a timely manner and appropriately recorded. Identify sources for new products; obtain competitive quotes for stockroom items to determine ongoing best sources and maintain good supplier relations while negotiating the best terms for Meridian. Ensure issuance/reviews/approvals of purchase orders to supply base. Responsible for appropriate records retention of purchasing/customs departments. Receive completed one time purchase requisitions, determine sourcing (if not previously sourced) and process to vendor. Place purchase orders for stockroom items and non-stockroom orders. Review/authorize discrepancy invoices prior to payment processing. Manage the procurement of materials/supplies to ensure quality, cost, delivery requirements specifications are in the best interest of Meridian. Continuous review of procurements to ensure appropriate negotiations are conducted with the supply base
• Communication and Teamwork: Assist in inventory counts & reporting. Contact stockkeepers and purchasing assistants when needed. Ensure inventory levels are appropriate & orders are timely to secure economic deliveries. Provide support & training to employees for procurement procedures & activities Assist and help employees to resolve problems they may have with any item that is issued from the stockroom, or problems with purchased items. Liaise with Accounting on invoicing discrepancies. Provide special handling directions to appropriate personnel where applicable. Internal communications on issues involving purchased products and/or services. Handle issues during off-duty hours as required.
• Provide training support for new Buyer(s).
• Capital and Tooling Backup for the Capital Buyer.
• Create and manage the RFQ’s in the PLEX system.
• Repair Backup for the stockroom Supervisor.
• On-call for weekend coverage / support for emergency breakdown situations.
• Source obsolete replacement part(s).
• Coordinates expedite emergency shipments.
• Source new suppliers.
• Assisting all team members with invoicing, PO creation, quotes and RFQ’s.
• Other responsibilities as required, including special projects as they arise.

• Ownership of a company laptop and the ability to access the system from remote locations.
• Right to issue stockroom purchase orders to pre-approved inventory levels.
• Issuing general purchase orders as approved in workflow.
• Issuing purchase orders to pre-determined dollar amount.
• To obtain quotes for component materials.
• Actively seek out better purchasing opportunities and vendors to maximize efficiency and minimize cost.
• Administration of relevant Plex modules.

• Build positive relationships with new and prospective suppliers/vendors.

Educational and Certification Background
1 Bachelor’s degree in Purchasing/Business administration or related field - Highly Desirable
2 Minimum of 5 years’ experience in purchasing with a professional designation - Essential
3 CPIM or CSCP designation - Desirable

Personal Competencies (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Attributes):
• Be familiar with the OH&S Act & Regulations
• Good verbal and written communication, negotiation, team problem solving & time management skills.
• Computer knowledge is essential.
• Able to work independently and as part of a team, meet deadlines, effectively handle pressure, and maintain good relations with suppliers and vendors.
• Knowledge of company policies & procedures
• Solid understanding of Purchasing Terms & Conditions
• Sound experience in the use of ERP system for purchasing activities.
• An understanding of basic accounting, general business techniques, databases & contract law.
