Summary of position

Reporting to the Director, Finance, the Estimator is responsible for developing prices that generate profit margins consistent with client and product/organizational strategies. The Estimator processes bid packages; generates quotes; and performs post-order profitability analysis.

As a team member, the Estimator collaborates with Production in the process of generating a work plan for efficient product execution; Sales in meeting pricing deadlines; Purchasing in the sourcing of material cost inputs; and Product Development in the discovery of new materials, products and manufacturing capabilities. The Estimator supports the department in the equitable and fair management of the daily workload, and participates in and identifies process improvement (administrative and product) opportunities.

Here are some the different activities you'll be asked to do:

  • Manage and coordinate quoting activities funneled through Client Services and Sales
  • Calculate costs by analyzing equipment, material and labour time requirements for each project
  • Establish selling prices, consistent with client/product and organizational profitability objectives
  • Communicate critical information to purchasing and production as it pertains to vendors, products and pricing
  • Generate and maintain master product specifications to produce quality jobs efficiently, using our existing equipment and/or outsourcing when appropriate
  • Routinely compare estimated and actual production and material cost to verify planned profitability
  • Investigate variances through collaboration with Production and/or Sales to determine a strategy to  mitigate future product variances
  • Monitor client and product margins for consistency with pricing strategies
  • Generate and maintain pricing files used within the department and with Client Services

If you've got:

  • A post-secondary degree or diploma
  • A minimum of 2 years estimating experience (preferably in sheet and web environment)
  • Advanced Excel skills (i.e. VLOOKUP Tables, Data Tables, If/OR and IF/AND statements, INDEX/MATCH Tables, conditional formatting)
