Health, Safety and Environmental Specialist

Major Responsibilities of Position

Environmental Management System (ISO 14001:2015): Responsible for the implementation, maintenance and promotion of the site’s certified Environmental Management System, including, but not limited to
i) the coordination, implementation, and maintenance of EMS program elements such as aspects/impacts, objectives, monitoring/ measurement, documentation, communications, emergency preparedness and response, internal audits and management review.
ii) coordination of all relevant audits and inspections to ensure conformance with the Environmental Management System.
iii) acting as site’s main point of contact to external certification body during external audits.
iv) management of all audit findings (internal and external), including the identification of root cause, corrective and preventive actions and support their implementation.
v) responsible for ensuring continuous improvement by reviewing and monitoring environmental performance, objectives and targets, risk and opportunities.
vi) keeping informed of all relevant stakeholder concerns (internal/external) and environmental customer requirements, including the submission of annual reports (e.g. CDP and M2030 etc.)

Environmental Compliance: Responsible for the identification and management of all relevant environmental compliance obligations (local, Provincial and Federal) and spills response, awareness of regulatory changes and the communication with relevant regulatory bodies. This includes, but is not limited to:
i) coordination of all annual reporting requirements (NPRI, GHG).
ii) coordination of all waste programs, including non-hazardous industrial solids, liquid industrial wastes and conventional waste/recycling programs, registrations (HWIN/RPRA), annual audit requirements and the management of manifests under relevant regulations
iii) coordination of the Transportation of Dangerous Goods program, including training, and all associated requirements in regards to relevant export permits.
iv) the maintenance of all site Environmental Compliance Approvals (Air, Sewage/Storm) including the implementation and execution of relevant sampling and monitoring programs, annual and situational reporting requirements.
v) work collaboratively with internal and external Legal resources to address situations as they may arise.

Environmental Program Management:

  • Assisting with annual budgetary process, including Capital, to ensure appropriate funds are requested for environmental compliance programs, to support internal objectives, and continued improved environmental performance.
  • Completion of periodic risk management activities.
  • Working collaboratively with other departments (e.g. Production, Maintenance, Engineering, Purchasing etc.) to ensure environmental requirements are being considered and met, and on special projects as they arise.
  • Providing advice and support to the Management Team to ensure Meridian remains compliant with all relevant regulations, legislation and customer requirements.
  • Support internal/external environmental incident investigations, including root cause analysis, corrective and preventive actions, their verification and relevant communications.

Training: Develop and provide relevant orientation training programs, and on-going training programs (monthly, weekly, situational etc.) as required for Meridian and contract personnel.

Health and Safety: Provide cover in the absence of Health & Safety Specialist.

Other duties as required, including special projects as they arise.

Educational and Certification Background

1 Post-secondary education in relevant environmental field (e.g. Environmental Engineering, Environmental Science, Geography, Biology, Sustainability, Environmental Technology etc.) Essential
2 Minimum 2 years’ experience in similar role Essential
3 Certified Environmental Management System Lead Auditor [EMSLA Designation] or actively working toward designation (e.g. recognized Lead Auditor Course completed). Essential
4 Working Knowledge and/or relevant training in Environmental Legislation (Provincial, Federal) Essential
5 Background and working knowledge of Health and Safety Preferred
6 Certificate or diploma related to Occupational Health & Safety Optional

Job Types: Full-time, Permanent

Pay: $68,000.00-$83,000.00 per year
