POSITION SUMMARY

The Senior Design Engineer evaluates customers’ specifications, conceptualizes the designs and guide Designers throughout the project. Lead the engineering behind heavy lifting, hoisting and pulling equipment at Timberland where custom equipment sales for cool infrastructure projects around the world are the norm.  Bring your text books with you – the engineering is real, high value and fast paced.

On projects you lead, you will facilitate our 3 pass engineering release process where you perform the majority of calculations required for the winch or hoist to be engineered and lead the process of advance material requisitions to get key components on order.  Then, utilizing the team of mechanical designers assigned to you for the project, you will lead the designers to prepare a set of productions drawings for the critical path fabrication.  Once those two passes are complete, you will lead the team of designers to complete the full set of production drawings. In this process, you will work with a multi-disciplinary team of engineering talent including mechanical, electrical and hydraulic designers as well as a team of manufacturing experts and skilled trades.

You will be hands on – the equipment you engineer is manufactured in the same building and you will be a key player in product testing on the factory floor.  In some cases, you will be called upon to travel to a customer site to assist them with site installation and commissioning. This is not a job for the faint of heart engineer – your engineering skills will matter and customers have chosen to work with us to reduce their project risk.  The trust customers have instilled in us is based on our engineering driven business model. The position summary is to be used as a guideline only and may not incorporate all functions of the job.

You will be responsible for the engineering design from project start to completion. This will include:

  • Prepare kit of information for Designers to complete layout and production drawings in an efficient and accurate manner (includes mechanical, hydraulic and electrical designers)
  • Provide preliminary engineering calculations, specifications, sketches and layouts as required by sales to estimate a machine to meet customer inquiries
  • Review engineering drawings, analyze design and retrieve information to complete drawing, layout or design
  • Ensure all drawings are checked for design and dimensional correctness prior to release for production
  • Aid in the resolution of external customer problems of a technical nature
  • Respond to factory questions/problems from factory personnel as they are encountered during fabrication and assembly of machines
  • Participate in testing and commissioning of new equipment

 ATTRIBUTES WE SEEK

  • Post-secondary degree mechanical engineering
  • P. Eng or working towards designation
  • Strong intellectual curiosity, a roll up your sleeves, perform calculations, can-do attitude and a strong sense of urgency

  • Share your knowledge while being humble to learning new things
