Job Summary
The Refining Operations Manager actively leads and is responsible for planning, overseeing, and monitoring the daily operations of the following departments: feed preparation, CO2 extraction, Hydrocarbon Extraction and isolation.  In addition, this role is responsible for providing direction, coaching and oversight to the teams within these departments driving optimal performance.
The key competencies required for this leadership role include strong leadership skills with the ability to foster strong leadership in direct reports, strong analytical and technical skills, drive to exceed company production goals (both short and long term) with an emphasis on continuous improvement, and being a collaborative problem solver, team player, and an effective communicator.

Responsibilities
  • Ensure departmental goals are clearly communicated and SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Timely)
  • Guide supervisors and managers within their department to be strong leaders that are focused on; employee safety, product quality, effective execution, supporting and developing the members of their team, strong communication, accountability, effective decision making, and continuous improvement
  • Monitor daily performance vs. production targets and troubleshoot any production issues in real time as part of our process improvement culture.
  • Drive closure of all safety related action items within a timely manner and lead department safety culture by completing monthly meetings and providing relevant updates.
  • Create and maintain a strong 5S culture.
  • Develop equipment and manpower schedules to meet production objectives
  • Management of departmental reward programs as necessary
  • Identify and drive improvements for process efficiency, employee safety and product quality. Actively provide improvements to decrease spending and improve sitewide revenue.
  • Develop and maintain all SOPs for the respective areas
  • Provide approvals, assessment and feedback for all production paperwork, production changes, new equipment, etc.
  • Collaborate with all other business functions to achieve the general goals of the organization 
People Management: 
  • Provide day-to-day oversight for direct reports and relevant teams.
  • Foster and maintain a positive and collaborative work environment to motivate staff
  • Identify, track and report on progress against organizational key performance goals
  • Identify and allocate resources (people and equipment) based on business & operational priorities
  • Identify and remove obstacles that prevent staff from accomplishing tasks
  • Provide continuous performance feedback for direct reports through regular one-on-one meetings and/or dept meetings
  • Conduct formal performance reviews for staff as per the schedule defined by Human Resources (2x per year)
  • Deliver Performance Improvement Plans (PIP) and monitor accordingly
  • Actively participate in the recruitment and progression planning processes to grow the department when required
  • With support from HR, manage the on and offboarding (termination)

Qualifications
  • MSc./BSc. degree required in chemical engineering, chemistry, engineering technology or related science
  • 5+ years experience in a laboratory and/or production environment, preferably in cannabis, pharmaceuticals, food, botanical extraction or related industry
  • 2+ years experience in team management
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Self-motivated  
  • Continuous improvement focus
  • High attention to detail
  • Commitment to safety and high-quality results
  • Strong time management skills including ability to multitask and prioritize
  • Experience in the cannabis industry is an asset
  • Individuals with a Health Canada security clearance will be given preference
  • Physically fit; standing and/or sitting will be required for long periods of time and must be able to lift up to 50 lbs
