Sr. Applications Engineer - Process Specialist

Applications Engineers – leveraging intel from the Sales Team – develop quotations to sell our customers a conceptual solution they can visualize and trust, with a competitive price tag. Applications Engineers are automation experts, applying technology and processes in custom configurations to generate solutions that are superior to our competitors to win new business for BOS. The Process Specialist will provide the Applications Engineering Team with an expert in manufacturing process and concept development, ensuring quotations are delivered with high-quality 3D concepts that are supported by robust but innovative automated processes, including simulations whenever possible or helpful to win.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Follow the Sales processes to create quotations and win business for BOS
  • Full review of the application and development of a professionally packaged quotation containing a high-level of attention to detail
  • Analyze the effectiveness and efficiency of customer production processes and develop strategies for enhancing them to offer better solutions
  • Review and analyze customer documents (including requests for quotes, scopes of work, and equipment specifications/standards), lead site visits/reviews of applications, and review product designs and past BOS history of equipment to ensure concept is optimized and effective, meeting customer specifications and expectations
  • Develop detailed manufacturing and material process flows and operating sequences at cell and station levels
  • Coordinate and communicate with customer technical counterparts to gain understanding of needs and develop relationships with key influencers
  • Identify key project components to be sourced by BOS and develop requests for quotes to identify technical capabilities and costs directly from suppliers
  • Lead collaboration with BOS engineering when additional support is required to create the best possible concept
  • Support accurate costing for quotes by individually analyzing and estimating time and material requirements for each aspect of the project
  • Support the team presenting quotes both internally and externally to customers to explain concept and validate budget
  • Support the delivery of professional sales presentations and occasionally tour customers/prospects through BOS
  • Attend project kickoffs and concept reviews to provide detailed explanation of budget and scope
  • Daily timesheet completion to ensure proper time allocation for cost of sales tracking
  • Weekly expense reports due by 5pm Friday afternoon for the completed week, including the prior weekend; approved travel includes site visits, quote presentations/reviews, and project kick-off/launch meetings
  • Support organization and management of quote folders and files
  • Review and compare past projects and quotes to identify areas of improvement
  • Help develop and improve standards/methods/processes to be used by the Team to achieve goals
  • Help develop and maintain tools/instruments/software/supplies for the Team and develop systems to manage them
  • Identify quoting and process inefficiencies and work with Team to find solutions to increase output and reduce stress
  • Continuous research of new technologies to ensure customers are provided with the best possible concept
  • Maintain general knowledge of automated products and their applications

 

Requirements

REQUIREMENTS

  • Post-secondary education in engineering is required, with a minimum of 5 years of experience in the custom automation and/or manufacturing industry
    • The ideal candidate is an expert in manufacturing process development and may have a background in manufacturing process engineering, industrial engineering, or something similar
  • Prior experience with an automation integrator would be a strong asset
  • Prior experience with AutoCAD, SolidWorks, and/or Octopuz for concept development and visualization would be a strong asset
  • Automotive manufacturing experience would be an asset
  • Prior cost estimation experience would be an asset

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS

  • Understanding of the automation industry, including the custom machine sales/quoting, design, build, and commissioning processes
  • Translating customer information into functional requirements for BOS
  • Process and concept development, including layout design, sequence and cycle time analysis, simulations, and risk management
  • Geometric dimensioning and tolerancing
  • Technical knowledge to understand the mechanics and principles of automation
  • Knowledge of cost drivers within the automation industry and the ability to quantify them (e.g. time, materials, tooling, expenses, etc.) and basic financial knowledge and understanding of costs, margins, and prices
  • Understanding machine build specifications and mechanical or electrical design drawings; creating 2D drawings
  • Sourcing subcontractors and performing comparative analyses
  • Utilizing industrial knowledge to effectively work with peers and customers to design and estimate complete systems
  • Excellent technical, written, and verbal communication skills
  • Confident and professional communication with all levels of BOS, customers, and suppliers
  • Ability to present ideas clearly and concisely
  • Teamwork and collaboration; ability to lead with influence
