Senior Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Engineer

Job Description:

3M is hiring an EHS Engineer for its Brockville* manufacturing site. In this position the successful candidate will be providing hands on support in a manufacturing environment, auditing and maintaining the site Environmental Program and Management Systems.  They will work with the team to drive continuous improvement activities in 3M’s Brockville Manufacturing site.  The ideal candidate will have strong knowledge in the field of chemical and/or environmental engineering and familiarity with environmental regulatory requirements.  They will also provide overall support within the EHS team and support site management to help cultivate and support a strong EHS culture and be fully in compliance with environmental requirements.  This position has a high technical learning potential in an energized team environment and will provide ample opportunity to lead and participate in projects that will direct impact the environmental footprint in our community.

*Successful security clearance under the Canadian Controlled Goods Registration program is a mandatory pre-requirement for this position at this location. Please note the following are some (but not all) of the listed requirements for Controlled Goods Clearance:

·         Must be a Canadian citizen normally residing in Canada, or must be a Permanent Resident normally residing in Canada

·         Must have valid and current identification (i.e.: driver’s license, passport, birth certificate)

·         Must be able to provide a residential address and employment history of the past 5 years

·         If applicable, living outside of Canada during the past five years will require an international criminal name check

• Maintaining federal, provincial, and municipal regulatory requirements in the area of the environment which includes:
  • NPRI Reporting
  • Maintaining and submitting Air Permit (EASR) renewals and updates
  • Ensuring waste disposition methods, and waste reduction planning
  • Managing storm & sanitary water requirements
• Developing and leading site-specific Environmental and Occupational Health and Safety initiatives to reduce/eliminate any environmental risk to our environment and our community.
• Assessing new and changing processes and equipment for environmental impact with opportunity to research, plan and execute such projects.
• Leading environmental related incident investigations to determine causal factors and root causes along with identify appropriate corrective actions to reduce risk and prevent reoccurrence.

• Creating and maintaining site training content and programs while contributing to departmental operating procedures and training in the areas of Environmental Health and Safety.
• Take a lead coordinator role in the sites ISO 14001 Environmental Management System where you will host regular audits, maintain certification, and facilitate management steering team meetings.  As part of this responsibility, the successful candidate will directly influence the site’s environmental footprint and initiatives to minimize impact to air, waste, and water. 
• Identifying and addressing environmental and health and safety concerns in a high paced manufacturing environment working towards a more environmentally sustainable operation.

• Actively supporting EHS Cultural Excellence through personal responsibility for safety, health, and environment, promoting a culture to identify and address incidents, near-misses, and potential hazards.
• Partnering with the various worker groups including production workers, technical support staff (engineering, maintenance), management, as well as vendors and consultants.

Basic Qualifications:

Candidates with the following qualifications will be in a strong position for immediate success in this role:

• Bachelor’s degree in Chemical and/or Environmental Engineering

• 3 years of Previous experience related to Environmental and/or Health and Safety roles in a manufacturing environment
• Working knowledge of Federal, Provincial and Local Regulations related to environmental
• Working knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act

Additional qualifications that could help you succeed even further in this role include:

• Degree or diploma in Occupational Health and Safety
• Professional Certification(s) such as: Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP)

• Mechanical aptitude for equipment design and operational understanding
• Ability to manage projects from conception to implementation including managing contractors
• Ability to be flexible with respect to work schedule as needed (site is 24hr operation)
• The individual requires a strong customer focus and collaboration skills with a proven ability to develop solutions that address customer needs
• Candidates must have strong self-motivation and time management skills
• Ability to work in a team atmosphere
• Strong communication skills (verbal, written and presentation)
• Strong computational skills
• Ability to manage and develop solid standard work practices

Location:  Brockville, ON

Chance of occasional travel to other 3M sites such as Perth ON, London ON, Chicoutimi QC, and Morden MB

Travel: In this role, you will be required to travel approximately 5% of the time, which may involve overnight stays. A valid driver’s license is required.
