Automation Mechanical Designer

Develop automation processes and create design packages for custom automation systems that are cost effective and produce a quality, functional machine that meets specifications and timeline. Provide a detailed drawing package for manufacturing within the required timeline that is accurate and results in minimal rework.

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Develop mechanical concepts and create mechanical designs in SolidWorks for automation systems
• Research and identify mechanical components for projects ensuring they meet application and customer requirements
• Communicate with suppliers to discuss component specifications, pricing, and lead time
• Interact with Project Management team and customer technical contacts to obtain clarification on customer specifications and to obtain customer information/CAD
• Present concepts/designs at concept reviews, internal design reviews, and at customer design reviews
• Create and assemble detailed drawing packages for the build team, with all necessary tolerance/dimensions, bills of materials, and assembly drawings
• Document information for Customer Manuals: As built Drawing package, BOMs, spare parts lists, maintenance items, and OEM documentation
• Identify, troubleshoot and develop solutions to mechanical build issues
• Support the Applications group by developing concepts, calculating cycle time, estimating design labour, and estimating mechanical purchases
• Develop RFQs for major mechanical system purchases and communicate with the supplier(s) involved
• Work with manufacturing team to review drawings confirming accuracy and identifying ways to optimize the design
• Continuous development participation and implementation of BOS Standards for Mechanical Design
• Weekly meeting with Mechanical Design group to discuss to group initiatives, priorities, workload, address any current issues or inefficiencies within the design group and generate solutions
• Regular communication with Mechanical Design Group Lead to identify priorities and review status of projects
• Attend White Board meetings to present status of design and hear status of other disciplines, as well as get updates on urgent issues

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

• Diploma or Degree in Mechanical Design and 5+ years in the custom automation industry
• Computer Expertise: SolidWorks, Microsoft Office 365

Knowledge:

• Strong working knowledge of developing concepts and finalizing designs for multiple projects.
• Thorough understanding of custom automation machine design including collaborative robots, vision systems, laser systems, assembly, welding, etc.
• Understanding of mechanical purchased components required including how they work, how long they last and specifications to ensure they are sized properly
• Knowledge of mechanical systems and details
