Technical & Aerosol Laboratory Services Manager
 

About the job

As a member of our Medical & Scientific team, you will lead all product development testing and prototyping services including mechanical and aerosol testing services and rapid and traditional prototyping. You will also plan, determine methods, assign resources including both people and equipment, develop the appropriate documentation and ensure we are meeting the appropriate international, industry, regulatory and safety standards.

 

Responsibilities Include:

 

People Management

  • Ensure staff have clarity of expectations through the delivery of objectives and understanding key deliverables
  • Maintain schedule and established time standard compliance for all staff, i.e. by organizing and directly supervising staff, administering leave, monitoring, responding to staff headcount requirements, etc.
  • Treat employees are fairly and equitably, have a sense of self-esteem, and are encouraged to develop to their full potential, i.e. by administering workplace policies and programs
  • Support employee development, i.e. by evaluating performance, providing feedback, and supporting their growth
  • Manage employee issues to enable employees to have a high degree of focus on their jobs, i.e. by resolving employee relations issues, performance problems, and disciplinary issues

 

Technical & Aerosol Laboratory Services Management & Improvement

  • Shape testing and prototyping methods, processes, equipment, facilities, supplies, and activities to provide safe, efficient, current, innovative, and high-quality service to customers within and outside TMI
  • Test TMI’s products to the most appropriate level, e.g., by staying current with relevant international and industry testing standards
  • Improve the capability of the measurement techniques operated by the laboratories, e.g., by designing and performing experiments
  • Maintain on time delivery of new product project, e.g., by managing the timely completion of all testing and prototype activities, maintaining open and timely communication with project stakeholders
  • Provide efficient service delivery, e.g., by ensuring test plans, protocols, etc. are documented properly
  • Manage accurate service delivery, e.g., by developing and validating spreadsheets for data analysis, by ensuring that lab notebooks are properly recorded, and verifying critical measurements

 

Regulatory & Policy Compliance

  • Maintain proper documentation standards to meet the regulatory and legal requirements of the Company
  • Meet all appropriate regulatory requirements and standards as they apply to the product or process being tested
  • Validate all equipment and software as required and that those validations are maintained in accordance with the regulatory requirements for the product or process being tested

 

Health and Safety:

  • Ensure compliance with relevant health and safety legislation, including the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, the Occupational Health and Safety Act, etc.
  • Train employees to work safety, i.e., by maintaining personal competency in departmental processes, equipment operation, materials usage etc., understanding the associated hazards in the department, and protecting workers from those hazards through information, training, and enforcement of procedures, laws, etc.
  • Ensure that equipment and facilities are maintained in safe condition, i.e., by maintaining personal competency in what “safe condition” looks like, conducting regular inspections, and addressing hazards if they arise
  • Ensure that all employees work in compliance with TMI’s Disability Management Procedure, i.e., by maintaining personal competency in the Procedure, informing employees of it, and enforcing it

 

Qualifications:

  • Diploma in Mechanical Engineering Technology or a related field of study
  • 5 years of experience in managerial technical laboratories in a regulated environment, including experience supervising technical employees
  • Experience with various testing methodologies including mechanical, airflow, aerosol, and chemical testing
  • Experience with various prototyping and manufacturing methods equipment including machining, rapid prototyping or additive manufacturing, injection moulding, and casting
  • Experience working within a regulated design and development environment and an understanding of the full design process from ideation through commercial manufacture
