Founded in 1976, Steelway is one of Canada’s largest manufacturers of steel building systems. We remain a family-owned and operated business dedicated to customized steel building solutions and employee-driven excellence.

As a valued member of our System Design team and the Steelway family, you’ll join a diverse, high-performing group of individuals who bring a wide range of talents, experiences, and backgrounds to the table. This position is for an existing vacancy.

ABOUT THE ROLE

The System Designer plays a key role in supporting our customers, district managers, and internal departments by preparing accurate, timely building designs and cost estimates. This position ensures that quote requests are processed efficiently, technical solutions are sound, and customer needs are addressed with professionalism and expertise.

Working closely with Building Sales, Component Sales, Order Entry, Estimating, Engineering, and our District Sales Managers, the System Designer helps deliver efficient building configurations, supports project start-up, and contributes continuous improvement in the estimating and building design process.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

Estimating & building design

  • Design buildings and determine associated costs in a timely manner, aligned with scheduling requirements.
  • Recommend efficient building configurations that reduce costs and improve overall design and manufacturing efficiency.
  • Complete a final review of estimates that have become orders prior to Technical Review.
  • Provide technical input and engineered solutions to owners, contractors, and internal teams at the start of complex projects.

Customer & stakeholder communication

  • Act as a liaison between Steelway customers and the District Sales Manager during the preparation of estimates.
  • Attend meetings with owners, contractors, architects, and District Managers as required to gather accurate information for estimating.
  • Ensure customer concerns, questions, and complaints related to estimating are handled promptly, courteously, and professionally.

Quote creation & workflow management

  • Receive inquiry information for quotations via email or phone.
  • Assign quote numbers and prepare estimates using the MBS software program.
  • Add or remove items not captured in the MBS system as required.
  • Obtain pricing input from other departments for special circumstances.
  • Email completed quotations to clients and send copies to the appropriate District Manager.
  • Enter all quotes into the CRM Quote Manager program.
  • Respond to questions from clients, District Managers, and internal departments regarding quotes.
  • Support engineering, purchasing, and other departments by providing information on orders as needed.
  • Prepare order write-ups and release orders on occasion, following Steelway procedures.

Safety & regulatory responsibilities

  • Use and operate equipment in a safe manner.
  • Report equipment defects and known workplace hazards.
  • Follow all requirements of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its regulations.
  • Be aware of and exercise rights and responsibilities under the Act.

Continuous improvement & collaboration

  • Contribute to the development and improvement of estimating procedures and building-related policies.
  • Support smooth communication and coordination across internal departments involved in estimating, order entry, engineering, and sales.

WHAT YOU WILL NEED

  • Experience in building design, estimating, or a related technical or construction environment.
  • Strong understanding of steel building systems or willingness to develop deep product and technical knowledge.
  • Proficiency with estimating or design software (experience with MBS is an asset).
  • Strong problem-solving abilities and the capacity to develop efficient, cost-effective building configurations.
  • Clear communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to work effectively with customers, contractors, architects, and internal teams.
  • High attention to detail and accuracy in cost calculations, documentation, and technical review.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple estimates and shifting priorities.
  • A customer-focused, solutions-driven mindset with the ability to handle inquiries and challenges professionally.
